The focal bead was made with a method called mokume game. It's my favorite technique for making beads in clay. I usually use 3 colors and a rubber stamp. I've "borrowed" from a fellow student in Gwen Gibson's class last summer and also from Ponaswan Sila, a clay artist from Thailand, working in the US. The beads are made of a deep tomato, orange and cream color clays. The technique used is called "watercolor" and was invented (?) by Maggie Maggio of the blog "Smashing Color". It's a layering technique that is fun but a little labor intensive.
